From Medals to Trees: Smiling Tree’s Tribute to Paris Olympics Champions
August 12, 2024
On 12.8.2024, in a heartwarming gesture of pride and environmental stewardship, the Eco-Technical Society of Guru Tegh Bahadur Institute of Technology (GTBIT), SWAAS, joined forces with the NGO, Smiling Tree to honour India’s Olympic shooting stars—Manu Bhaker, Sarabjot Singh, and Swapnil Kusale—who clinched bronze medals at the Paris Olympics. Smiling Trees, led by Dr. Kwatra and his children, has planted over 8 lakh trees and runs anti-plastic campaigns, showcasing their commitment to sustainability. The event was marked by the planting of 230 saplings on the GTBIT campus, each tree symbolising a tribute to the athletes' hard work and dedication.
.
The presence of GTBIT's Chairman, S. Amarjeet Singh, and Director, Dr. Rominder Randhawa, along with enthusiastic faculty members, added significance to the occasion. This initiative not only celebrated the athletes' achievements but also underscored the institute’s commitment to nurturing a greener future, drawing a parallel between the growth of trees and the rising stature of India's sports heroes. The event served as a reminder that, much like the planted saplings, the success of these athletes will continue to grow and inspire future generations. The initiative beautifully intertwined the celebration of sports excellence with a commitment to a greener planet, illustrating how achievements in one field can inspire progress in another. This special tree plantation drive not only paid tribute to the athletes’ successes but also planted the seeds for a brighter, more sustainable future
